Those of us who live in and love Fairfax understand the “only in Fairfax” reference intimately. Fairfax is special. Relaxed, welcoming, beautiful, and somewhat crunchy. It’s old Marin with a constantly contemporary vibe. Coffee shops, boutiques, excellent restaurants, trails, lakes, farmer’s market, bars, live music … I mean, this may be the coolest town in Marin, but don’t say we said that. We’ll give you a little history in a minute, but don’t miss:

Mas Masa The best sweet-potato-and-cheese (with pepitas and honey) quesadillas. OMG!!!! So good.

And a forever favorite for finer dining and locally sourced ingredients is Fradelizios. The owner is the real deal and makes a point to serve the best of the best, including atmosphere.

For the best sushi you’ve maybe ever had, try Village Sake. People come from far and wide to have a seat at this award-winning sushi restaurant. Come for the sushi, stay for the trip that is Fairfax.

Can’t forget about Sorella Caffe, a family establishment locally owned by two sisters. Sorella’s offers you a place where its customers are family. Enjoy a nice Italian meal, cooked by one of the owners herself and served by the other. Live music every weekend offers you a perfect place for all occasions.

We could go on and on. Be sure to visit Deer Park for magical hikes — especially the Yolanda Trail — and also get a day pass up at the lakes. Bon Tempe and Lake Lagunitas will make you feel like you are hundreds of miles away from the busyness of daily living, but it’s just right here in the hood! Visit the Mt. Tam Watershed to find out all about the hidden secrets of Marin.

Now for that history we told you about:

Originally built around the scenic railroad along the coast in 1913, Fairfax offers the same beauty to the 7,500 residents who are nestled right beneath iconic Mount Tamalpais. Located 20 miles from San Francisco and 17 miles from Point Reyes, there are boundless hiking and biking trails where you can appreciate nature.

The land was previously inhabited by the Northern Sierra Miwok, who were known to frequent the grounds on the edge of the Fairfax Creek where the Pavilion currently lies. Incidentally, the town got its name from Charles Snowden Fairfax, an English lord who turned down his title of 10th Lord Fairfax of Cameron to enjoy his home here instead.

These days, you’ll find parts of Fairfax are a blast from the past, and it keeps a sliver of 1960s counterculture. You could take a stroll around the heart of this small town and pass Coffee Roastery, Mac’s at 19 Broadway (a speakeasy-style cocktail lounge), many small boutique shops, and parks.
